• Question: Why is it spring on the 20th of march this year and it sometimes changes, also it feels like spring starts in march because it gets warmer, so why don't we just call march the start of spring. How can you tell that spring starts on the 20th of march? Also I am born in early march so does that tecniqualy make me a winter baby not a spring baby?

It is just a human convention – spring starts when the flowers come out and the birds start to sing 🙂 but people like to have an offical date for boring stuff like accountancy

I agree with Ian that when spring starts is down to when we have traditionally decided to say it has! The date around 20th March is because that is the spring equinox, when the tilt of the Earth means that the sun comes back into the northern hemisphere and we start getting longer days and more of the sun’s heat. But, as Ian says, spring really starts with lambs and chicks and crocuses!
