I like paintings with a lot of colour (especially landscapes), or that make an interesting observation or point (Banksy).
I think art and science work together really well. Microscope images can be really beautiful. Slightly unrelated but I like that if you don’t have a scale bar then sometimes it is hard to know if you are looking at the microstructure of a metal, or a shot of the earth from high up!
Yes, I do like art. I used to live in London and would love going to some of the amazing galleries there. I am not very good at art, but I know many scientists (including my boss) who are also really good artists.
Oh yes, I love sculpture. I really like Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink. I dabble in art myself sort of – I make odd bits of jewellery now and then, mostly silver, on holiday once my wife found some pieces of jet so I mounted them in a necklace.
I also made our wedding rings – the most expensive mistake I’ve made – not the wedding! You start by making the thing out of wax then set in in plaster and melt the wax out so you can pour the gold in, I miscalculated how heavy the rings would be when cast in gold and needed twice as much as I thought. ( mind you they are very nice rings )
I did sketching when I was younger but I wasn’t very good at it. And a few years ago, I just randomly bought a set of paints, brushes and stuff and decided I was going to learn how to paint by watching youtube videos! As you can imagine, I was not very successful 🙂
