      Hi,

Well science degrees generally have a high earning potential. Especially Materials Science as there are a shortage of people to fill jobs in this area.

PhD students receive money from research councils and industry sponsors, how much you get depends on who is funding you, and to some extent where your labs are (people working in London need more money because the rent is higher). We also get extra money by teaching undergraduates and school students. I don’t know what you would say is a lot of money, but I would say that I am comfortable- I have enough to pay rent, run a car, eat out and go on holiday every now and again.
