Well I applied on a bit of an outside chance and got accepted. I wouldn’t focus on going to Oxford specifically if I were you. I would just work hard and get involved with as many science projects as you can. Don’t do something because that is what helps you get into University, do something because it is interesting and exciting. That way, when you do need to start thinking about University applications, you will have more experience of what you are looking for in your degree course. It might be that a different University has a course you would prefer. I can really recommend science summer camps (like HeadStart and UNIQ) to help you explore what you want to study.
I applied as I could only think of four other places to put down. I did the entrance exam because I thought I’d never get three A’s at A level and if I passed all the pressure was off. To my utter shock I actually did pass the entrance exam. As Jess said – don’t just focus on getting in to Oxford but don’t be afraid of trying either. Read around a bit and pick some areas of science you really like to pick up a bit more knowledge and try to get some work XP – just write to a few university departments – or better find individual labs to write to. Having work XP people around can be a bit of a pain but I never ever turn down someone who takes the trouble to ask me if they can do it in my lab – it’s far too important.
