      So long I’m part of the furniture at work! Twenty years, not including my degree.
      I was very lucky with my second ‘proper’ job and got a ‘permanent contract’ – many scientists their career on three year contracts on a particular project and have to keep looking for new posts until they find somewhere more long term. Choosing to run and manage the equipment got me away from that onto a job contract with no end date but it doesn’t mean I don’t have to work hard and they could still throw me out if they wanted.
