Stomach enzymes are essential for the digestion of food. Before nutrients can be absorbed through the intestine walls, food needs to be broken down. Enzymes in your saliva begin this process in your mouth. They break protein (meat/fish) down into amino acids; carbohydrates (bread/potatoes) into glucose; fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
