We had an optional class in our third year of our degree which was focused on bio-medical materials. I really enjoyed it, so I spoke to the lecturer about doing my fourth year research project in his group. So I spent a year working on a project with cow tendons, pulling them apart at high speeds to see if we could work out what happens when people fall and rip a tendon. I really liked the project, and I found the other projects in the team interesting too, so I decided to stay on for a PhD.
I was always quite interested in medical science, but I didn’t want to be a doctor. It worked out rather nicely in the end!
