I do a lot of ‘mechanical testing’ experiments. Which basically means that I make things, then pull them apart, or squash them (in a big rig) to see what happens. I like these experiments best because it is exciting to watch, and the machines that we use are exciting and very clever. Some of them can heat your sample up, or do the experiment underwater, and film it.
We do mechanical testing experiments so that we know what will happen to our materials in different environments. So if you are making a bridge then you can test how strong the metal you have chosen is, and then you know whether it will be able to hold the weight of cars and people.
