Wow that’s tall order.
I’ll just tell you about my favourite: Richard P Feynman – he’s wise and funny and irreverent and cool. And he made a big contribution to physics and science in general. He also got out there engaged with the people at large, wrote books for the general public, made them think science was cool. It isn’t just science, in his whole approach to life I think there is something to learn.
I’d say read ‘Surely you’re joking Mr Feynman’ and ‘What Do You Care What Other People Think?’. Also search for him on youtube – there’s a bunch of interviews and stuff with him. I like this one where he talks about how the whole universe is in a glass of wine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0h_uI-Dmb4
I don’t know if you need to be older to appreciate it, but do look him up!
